Biographical / Historical
Jessie Tarbox Beals (1870–1942) was an American photographer, the first published female photojournalist in the United States and the first female night photographer. In 1928, at the age of 58, Beals moved to Santa Barbara and set up a studio in El Paseo, and later in Meridian Studios. Although Beals presence in Santa Barbara was short-lived, she left behind a sparse but grand portfolio of local architecture, gardens, and estate photography.
