Provenance
Gift of Alan and Paul Wellman. The story of the photos is; Alan Wellman, brother of Paul Wellman, saw a collection of slides and prints of various sizes at an estate sale in downtown Santa Barbara sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. He saw great history in the images and told Paul he approached the seller in case they did not understand the value. The seller was said to be uninterested and confirmed they were for sale. It is unknown if the location of the sale was connected to Marie Phillis. Alan never mentioned her to Pau and Paul has no knowledge of her personally. Alan chose to keep perhaps half of images for himself and saw that others found their way to entities (in)directly connected to the subject matter of the photos. Alan has since died and Paul is sure he would be happy that SBHM took possession of the remaining prints. Paul Wellman made the donation in memory of Alan Wellman.
