1. Shawl; square-shaped, dark rose-colored silk with variegated rose to gold silk knotted fringe; fabric measures 44" square plus 27" of fringe, making a total of 71" square Condition: Poor, silk is torn in several places, particularity at one corner. Donor's comments: "Guestimated century-old silk shawl of Early California Festivities, possibly from Spain (hand fringed); Curators interested in design of fringe, to try duplication." Shawl belonged to S. Helen Brown, a resident of Santa Barbara and friend of Dr. Pearl Chase, and was worn during numerous Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara, 1930s- 1980 2. Book; Elder, Paul.
