Content Description
This accession documents a complex transaction of an exchange, donation, and transfer between three (3) parties; James Layne, Clifton Smith, and Santa Barbara Historical Society (SBHS). On this date, Layne donated two (2) bits, a photograph, a rope, a riata, and fifty-two (52) cattle brands to SBHS, some items of which were already on loan to SBHS from earlier transactions. In exchange for these two bits, SBHS transferred ownership of two (2) other bits to Layne, already held by SBHS from previous donations. At the same time, twenty-seven (27) of the 52 donated cattle brands were released by SBHS to Clifton Smith.

- Of the 52 cattle brands. 27 are hereby released to Mr. Clifton Smith.
