Biography

The artist Vuk Vuchinich (1901–1974) was born in Nikshitch, Montenegro, in Yugoslavia, and attended the University of Serbia. He moved to New York City where he studied sculpture at the National Academy of Design and the Beaux Arts Institute of Design under Robert Ingersoll Aitken (1878–1949), and Lee Oscar Lawrie (1877–1963), and painting under Charles Courtney Curran (1861–1942). Vuchinich worked as a photographer for the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration in 1937. He painted portraits and also worked as a commercial illustrator for magazines, including Time, but as an artist he is best known as a sculptor. From 1921 until 1940 he was active in Santa Barbara, California. He died in Miami in 1974. www.reynoldahouse.org/
