Biography
The Arata family was a Spanish (possibly Basque) family that came to Santa Barbara, California in the 19th century. Juan Arata married María Antonia Jimeno (d. 1928), daughter of an acting governor of Alta California, Manuel Jimeno. The Aratas have a Californio heritage that their prominence in Santa Barbara politics and business only accented. - from Huntington Library
