St. Mary's Retreat House (1954-) (Santa Barbara, Calif.)
Organization
Biography
St. Mary's Retreat House, adjacent to the Old Mission, was established by the Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity, part of the same Episcopalian community that runs Mt. Cavary Monastery. A wealthy donor purchased the main house of hte old Hazard estate for the Sisters in 1954; the Sisters later purchased the second house and the remainder of the 7.5-acre estate. Both houses have a cozy, bed-and-breakfast-style charm; behind, terraces and gardens overlook sycamore-thick Mission Canyon and the Museum of Natural History. - from Santa Barbara Magazine November/December 1991
